EN 12079 : 2006 Offshore Containers and Associated Lifting Sets:

 

The standard consists of three parts:

EN12079 -01:2006 Offshore Containers — Design, manufacture and marking

EN12079 -02:2006 Lifting sets — Design, manufacture and marking

EN12079 -03:2006 Periodic inspection, examination and testing

 

Scope

The standard specifies the ‘...requirements for the design, manufacture and marking of offshore freight and service containers with maximum gross mass not exceeding 25,000 kg…’

 

Definitions

 

For the purposes of EN12079 : 2006, an offshore container is defined as ‘...a portable unit for repeated use in the transport of goods or equipment handled in open seas to, from and between fixed and/or floating installations and ships…’

 

Design

The standard requires that offshore containers shall

· ‘...have sufficient strength to allow loading and unloading from vessels offshore operating in a sea state with significant wave heights of 6 m and to withstand impact from heavy seas…’

· ‘...shall be designed to withstand tilting at 30o in any direction, without overturning when loaded at its maximum gross mass…’
